Emma uses her site to promote her preschool music classes, and allow families to register for classes online.
She started with Site Setup Kit’s Dynamik Style 1, and over the course of about a month, transformed it into her own unique site:
Emma, where did you start?
I was starting a new business and website from scratch. I was totally new to web design. I had played around with some free WordPress themes but was not really happy with my results. A customised, hosted website template for music teachers was another option. It had all the bells and whistles but the cost and the design options didn’t excite me. I also wanted the challenge of doing it myself and personalising the look and personality of my website. As I was dithering, I became aware of the perception that a self-managed WordPress site had countless security issues that I wouldn’t be able to manage on my own.
Then I chanced upon the Big Brand System website. It gave me all the confidence I needed to get over my fears. My marketing strategy and the importance of having a consistent design became clear and I found a new level of enthusiasm for my business. Site Setup Kit was brilliant. At last I had real tools to use and oh such helpful and sensible advice. I am very proud of what I have been able to do in a short time and my new-found confidence has prompted me to delve into the alien world of html and css.
What was the most challenging part of putting your website together, and how did you overcome it?
The most challenging time was settling on a colour scheme for my website and marketing materials. I had already designed my own logo (which was quite a business for someone new to the world of vector graphics). The red and blue I had chosen proved to be exceedingly difficult to match with another colour. I was very reluctant to give up my 2 main colours as I felt they really did represent my business well—bright and cheery without being typical “preschool” colours. I think I tried about 6 different colour-schemes and was becoming quite despondent. Then I was having lunch in a beachside suburb and the idea of a 1950s, beach ball, ice-cream, soft-drink, summer-inspired red, white, cream and blue colour-scheme came to me. I found a 1950s poster and took all my colours from that using the Adobe Kuler site. It worked a treat!
What advice do you have for someone who’s looking ahead at all the work involved in putting together a website for their business?
Don’t be scared off by developers telling you that you won’t be able to handle it alone. There is so much support and inspiration available from Pamela and Wendy. You could search the internet for days and weeks, wading through free advice of dubious value. Site Setup Kit is worth every dollar. It gives you everything you need to get started, and then some. Make a website that you love and can be proud of. It is a great feeling.
Anything else you’d like to add?
Having such great tools and ongoing advice and support, I know that I can continue to develop my website while maintaining the same overall look and feel that I love so much.
