An instant style for a brand-new business
Marlene uses her site to share information about a new service she offers, online video.
Marlene, tell us about yourself:
I own ImageMaven Inc., and this new website is an offshoot of that business. I use it to sell a video production service I just started. It’s still very fresh and I’ll be adding more sample videos and case studies as they are completed.
Where did you start?
I built my original ImageMaven.com photo website over 10 years ago using html and later Dreamweaver, and then in early 2010 I moved to a WordPress hosted site and the Thesis theme.
It was one of those things were you set it up and kind of forget about all the little tweaks and things. So it felt like I was starting from scratch because I didn’t remember how to do much, except add content.
What was the most challenging part of putting together your new site?
For me the challenges have always been design and coding related. So I used one of the Site Setup Kit styles so that I’d have less to setup initially. That way I didn’t have to agonize over fonts and coding. I did pick some colours though. That part is fun! I also designed a custom header in Photoshop.
I had a problem getting my menus setup, and Wendy was able to help me out with that.
And getting good content can be a challenge for me as I’m not the most prolific writer. Still tweaking the written parts and I’m getting a lot of advice from colleagues on that subject. That’s the benefit of DIY. You are able to change things really quickly yourself. I can’t imagine handing that off to a website company.
What advice do you have for people who are about to start working on their websites?
Definitely start with a Style Warehouse style. It just takes the pressure off. I actually made another site using Site Setup Kit for my brother’s landscaping business and I used a Style Warehouse style for it too. I just changed the colours and added a custom header using his logo.
Anything you’d like to add?
I have a great web hosting company who I’ve been with since I started ImageMaven.com and they were able to add my new domain to my hosting plan at no extra charge, as well as install WordPress and the MySQL database for me. That really helped ensure that I had no technical hiccups to deal with. They also do daily backups of my websites (and I’ve had to use the backup in the past when I tried to play with code) so I feel 100% covered.
I have to say, I just went through the steps in Site Setup Kit and followed along with the set up instructions until my site was complete. Now I’m filling in the content as it’s available and adding in extras like widgets.
